Nofollow links get their name because of the rel="nofollow" attribute, which instructs search engine crawlers not to follow the link. Thus, the link does not carry the weight of the page to which the link leads.
The nofollow attribute was introduced by Google in 2005 to prevent sites being flooded with external links, and is still widely used today.
To close a page using the rel="nofollow" attribute, it must be attached to the <a> tag. Now nofollow links are used to block the transfer of link weight.

Hey bro!
Thanks for the information. It is the best description of nofollow link I've ever read!

What is nofollow link ?
A nofollow link, or backlink, is a link which does not pass authority on to the website it is linking to. These links do not help in terms of SEO. To make a link nofollow, add rel=”nofollow” to the code when linking to a website.

Hi. Nofollow links are named after the name of the tag that is used for such links. HTML has the <a> tag, which is used in the code of pages to create links. One of the attributes of this tag is rel; it defines the relationship between the linked page and the current page. The “Nofollow” attribute is precisely responsible for ensuring that the page you are linking to does not increase its link power due to this link. In other words, this link does not transmit the citation index (which is used by Yandex) and PageRank (which is used by Google). According to one of the Google employees, the “nofollow” attribute is needed to show search engines that you don't want to have anything to do with the resource you are linking to (and even more so, do not want to increase its link power).

This is a link that has no authority where you place it. It's best not to put one in, because very often when you google it, you simply won't see it there. For example, it was not a good idea if you put up 'chat room' or 'online video chat' or something like that and you type it in and don't see any results.

A nofollow link is an HTML attribute that can be added to a hyperlink to instruct search engines not to follow the link or to give it less weight in their ranking algorithms. Nofollow links are often used when linking to external websites or when linking to pages that the website owner does not want to endorse or be associated with.

The nofollow attribute is added to a hyperlink by including the attribute "rel=nofollow" in the anchor tag. For example:

Quote:
<a href="http://www.example.com" rel="nofollow">Link</a>

When a search engine encounters a nofollow link, it will not follow the link and will not pass any "link juice" or ranking power to the linked page. This can be useful for websites that want to link to external resources without endorsing them or for websites that want to prevent certain pages from receiving unnecessary link authority.

Here's what it means in simpler terms:

Normal link: When you click on a normal link, search engines like Google also "follow" that link and visit the linked-to page. They analyze the content of the page and may consider it for their search results based on various factors.
Nofollow link: When you click on a nofollow link, search engines won't automatically visit the linked-to page. This means the linked page won't receive any "ranking boost" or "link juice" from the referring page.
